What to prepare before building a website
A two-page checklist of materials — the brief, the copy, the photos, the logins and the legal bits. Go through it before anyone starts drawing. It saves weeks, for us and for you.
The checklist as a PDF
Two A4 pages, to print out or tick off on screen. Enter your e-mail and we will send it to you.
No newsletter, no letters every week. One e-mail with an attachment and then peace. Or download the PDF directly, without filling anything in.
Most delays do not start with the code, but with the materials. The site is often finished and everyone is waiting for two paragraphs of copy, for a logo in a decent format, or for domain access nobody has. That is what this list is for. It is not red tape — it is everything we will need from you during the build anyway, just written down in advance.
You do not need everything ticked off before you get in touch. But the more you have, the sooner the site goes out and the less we have to ask.
01 The brief — before anyone starts drawing
- In one sentence: what the company does and who for.
- What the website has to do. Bring in enquiries? Bookings? Sell? Or be a calling card so that people can find you?
- How you will know in six months that it paid off. Ideally a number — five enquiries a month, say.
- Three competitors’ websitesthat you like, and one sentence on why.
- Who approves the design. One name. Approval by a committee of three is the most common reason for delay.
- When the site has to be out and why exactly then — a trade fair, a season, opening a new branch.
02 Copy — what will be on the pages
- A list of the pagesyou want to have.
- Three to five sentences for each service or product. They do not have to be polished, we will tidy them up.
- Prices or price ranges — and a decision on whether you want them published.
- A paragraph about the company: when it started, how many of you there are, what makes you different.
- Five to ten questionsthat customers keep asking you. This is gold, for people and for Google alike.
- Contact details: address, phone, e-mail, company and VAT number, opening hours.
03 Images — what it will look like
- The logo in its original format — .ai, .eps, .svg or at least .pdf. Not one downloaded from Facebook.
- Photos of the premises, the people or the products. A phone camera is fine, as long as they are sharp and well lit.
- Brand colours, if you have any. Colour codes or a brand manual will do.
- Certainty that you are allowed to usethe photos. Images downloaded off Google cannot be used.
04 Logins — what will need unlocking
- Who owns the domain and who it is registered with. Including the login details.
- Where the current website runs and where the company e-mailruns. They are two different things, and e-mail is what breaks most often during a move.
- Systems to connect: bookings, newsletter, CRM, stock, accounting, payment gateway.
- Any existing Google Analytics, Search Console and Google Business Profile accounts.
- Access to Facebook and Instagram, if you want them linked.
05 Legal — what has to be on the site
- Company number, registered office and the register entry details.
- Terms and conditions, if you sell through the site.
- A privacy policy. The moment you have a form on the site, you need one.
- Who in the company is responsible for personal data.
06 Three brakes — what slows a build down most
- “We’ll supply the copy later.” The most common reason a finished website sits unpublished for months. Two paragraphs are missing and the whole thing stops.
- Approval by committee. Every extra round of comments adds days. Name one person who decides.
- Changing the brief halfway. It is not a problem to do. It just cannot then be done by the same date — and it is fair to know that up front.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to have everything ready before I get in touch?
No. Get in touch straight away — we will give you a price and a date within 24 hours even without the materials. The checklist is there so the build then runs without waiting.
What if I do not have the copy?
On the Business package we tidy the copy up from your materials; on Complete we write all of it. On Basic you supply the copy — which is also why it is the cheapest.
I do not have the logo as vectors, can it still be done?
It can, but the result is worse — you cannot make a sharp version for print or for large screens out of a small image. If you do not have the original, say so and we will agree whether to redraw the logo.
Who sorts out the domain and the e-mail?
We can take it over; we just need the logins or the domain owner’s consent. We handle company e-mail separately and in advance, so that it does not go down during the move.
What if I do not have terms and conditions or a privacy policy?
We can prepare a basic version. We do not provide legal review — that is what a solicitor is for, and with selling through a website it is worth it.
